comScore: Facebook now rules Asia
With several months of rampant growth, the latest numbers from comScore World Metrix show Facebook as THE dominant social network in across Asia.
The nearest rival, Baidu Space, has nearly 5 percentage points less reach than Facebook.
The reasons behind this are varied by market, but Facebook’s popularity is partly due to the desire of users to connect out of their countries as well as the popularity of Facebook’s mobile application.
Facebook’s growing popularity in Asia will help the company’s bottom line. Their partner for ad sales in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, ihub, recently announced an expansion of staff to meet demand.
“We have seen phenomenal growth for Facebook in the past year. It has, therefore, become important for us to strengthen our team to accelerate our business regionally,” Kyle Lim, chief executive officer of ihub told Rayana Pandey of Marketing-Interactive.
The number of Facebook user increased in May by 296% in Malaysia, 257% in Taiwan, 171% in Singapore, according to ComScore Media Metrix data cited by Pandey. The number of users in the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia have also been growing considerably.
