Happy New Year, everyone!

Ringing in the New Year obviously means ringing in our predictions for the up-and-coming technologies in 2014.

For years, companies have taken a stab at coupling technology into the fashion scene only to be met with lackluster reception. However, 2013 was a turning point.

From Diane Von Furstenberg debuting the use of Google Glass in her 2013 New York Fashion Week show to a growing popularity of daily wearable devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Gear, the Nike Fuelband and the Jawbone Up, we predict many companies will be at their sketchbooks…er, I mean, drawing boards.

2. Fingerprinting and Biometrics

Although this technology is not new, its presence in the consumer market is. With the release of the iPhone 5S, we foresee a rise in the popularity of biometrics. A lot of Apple’s competitors will now be vying each other to build scanners into their devices.

3. 3D Printing and Scanning

Worldwide shipments of 3D printers are expected to grow 75% this year. With more research, these technologies are now becoming cheaper and more accessible. Even companies that are not in the tech industry are jumping on the bandwagon. Ford’s 2014 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) this year will debut 3D printing technology.

4. Direct Messaging Revolution

We saw the proliferation of smartphone calling and chatting apps in 2013: Whatsapp, WeChat, Viber, KakaoTalk and LINE just to name a few. This isn’t going anywhere in 2014 and if anything, we predict apps that are not traditionally used for direct communication to build in this function – think the new in-app Instagram Direct messaging app.
