			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A group of students from Singapore Management University have just completed a look at Korea&#8217;s social media landscape, including an interview with Howard Han, leader of the Ogilvy social media team in Seoul. The students have pulled together a range of information on South Korean social media, which they summarized for Asia Digital Map with the below posting. <p>A communications course, Digital Media Across Asia, conducted in Singapore Management University (SMU), has brought together a group of 5 students (4 from SMU and 1 from Korea University) to share about the digital media landscape in South Korea. What makes this course unique is that our project requires us to share our research and findings the digital way.</p>
<p>싱가포르 경영 대학(SMU)의 커뮤니케이션 수업, ‘아시아 전역의 디지털 미디어’를 통해서 한국의 디지털 미디어 환경에 대한 의견을 나누기 위해 네 명의 SMU 학생, 한 명의 고려대 학생, 총 다섯 명의 학생이 모였습니다. 이 과목이 특별한 것은, 우리가 찾아낸 것들을 디지털 방식으로 공유해야 한다는 것입니다.</p>
<p>Over the past 10 weeks, we have collated the latest statistics and interviewed several experts on digital media in Korea. Instead of writing reports and submitting it to our professor, Michael Netzley, we have been tasked to organize a one-week social media campaign to share with the rest of the world the conclusion of our findings. Our strategy is to actively engage our audience in three ways: read, listen and watch.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We just held a &#8220;Fast Content&#8221; competition which all Ogilvy employees in APAC could take part.</p>
<p>Why &#8220;Fast Content&#8221;? The quick creation of compelling content is an increasingly important skill to create strong social media campaigns.</p>
<p>The winner of our competition got an all-expense paid trip to the Ogilvy Social Media Summit in Hong Kong from May 25 to 27. We will have more than 50 social media specialists gathered from more than 14 markets for three days of non-stop social media.</p>
<p>Below is a selection of entries received.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently spoke with Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO of WPP (Disclosure: my ultimate boss), about how traditional advertising agencies can best incorporate social media.</p>
<p>While PR was the function of agencies that benefited most from social networks, social will play an integral role across all parts of agency work, including advertising and in-store retail.</p>
<p>For that reason, agencies need to break down silos: Social media permeates everything.  To restrict it to one discipline would be silly.</p>
<p>Social media in Asia sits at the crossroads of Sorrell&#8217;s three obsessions: New markets, new media and research.</p>
<p>How can social media be incorporated into existing firms?  Sorrell suggests building a social media practice into each aspect of the company &#8211; all the account groups, creative groups, and media groups &#8211; and then, if possible, graft on acquisitions.</p>

<p>In the top chart, vertical denotes mobile penetration, with horizontal looking at Internet penetration. The size of the balls denote the actual number of people online. Please note the data is quite dated, going back to 2008. Click on the chart to get a larger version.</p>
<p>Among the reactions I have to the top chart are:<br />- I still find it remarkable how mobile penetration can go above 100 percent (notably Hong Kong)<br />- While China has a huge number of netizens, there is tremendous room to grow.<br />- Malaysia is remarkably advanced among peers in the region, with the Philippines a laggard.</p>
<p>From the below, using GDP per capita to decide the size of the circles:<br />- You can see Vietnam&#8217;s remarkable level of connectivity relative to its wealth. Thailand, which is at a similar level of penetration for mobile phones and Internet, has four times the GDP per capita.<br />- Indonesia and the Philippines, at roughly the same level of GDP per capita, you can see the Philippines has taken a route towards mobile development while Indonesia is more Internet. (Though both are similar). China vs Thailand shows an even more divergent model.</p>

<p>The &#8220;Fill the Sky&#8221; CNY Fireworks app allows users to add virtual fireworks displays to any photo that they&#8217;d like to take. Personalized text greetings can also be added in Chinese and/or English. The holiday photos can then be emailed to family and friends, be directly uploaded to users&#8217; Weibo accounts, be shared through social networks or saved for future use.</p>
<p>The App is FREE and available now on the App Store.</p>
