KakaoTalk has over reached a billion daily messages! The number of messages delivered on KakaoTalk is exponentially increased over the past year. The number of message amount sent over KakaoTalk per minute is equivalent to the number of Google search created and the number of stories created on Newsfeed of Facebook each minute. Read More

While KakaoTalk is dominating Korea, Line is rapidly conquering foreign countries. Line currently retains a large number of users in Europe which became its driving force of the growth.
The idea of ‘TV+SNS = Social TV’ is catching users’ eyes and rising as a hot trend in social media. KTH launched ‘TV Talkers’ which allows sharing audiences’ opinions on the same program they are watching through smartphones. Also it allows app users to recommend TV programs each other to make their opinions are reflected on the program ratings. Read More

In the age of 19 to 29, the portion of positive answers on the question was 47.7% which was 10% higher than the negative answers. This phenomenon was similarly showed in the age of 30s.

Six months have passed since Ogilvy’s China social media team updated the infographic we use to show the local platforms thriving in place of the major international equivalents.

Since then new social media platforms have become relevant, either side of the Great Firewall, and so we have reworked the infographic to reflect some of the changes.

[Click the graphic to view a larger, clearer version]

Some of the more interesting changes:

The merging of SNS and Microblogging categories: The line has always been blurred between Chinese SNS and microblogs, but with recent changes made to Sina and Tencent weibos that make them as much like Facebook as they are like Twitter, as well as the increasingly “Facebook-like” role in society of these platforms, I felt we had to reflect this in our infographic.

The addition of Purchase Sharing: Only a very rough equivalent to Buyosphere, platforms like Meilishuo and Mogujie allow people to share photos of what they have bought or might buy and allow easy links to shopping sites. These are growing quickly in popularity, especially among young women, and are an important force in branding that I believe marketers must do more to take advantage of.

The addition of Light-blogging: A number of Tumblr clones, such as DianDian and Sina’s Qing, have become popular in China among those that want a change from the “noisy” nature of Weibo.

The addition of Online Dating: You don’t get much more social than China’s dating websites, which are exploring various revenue models and have even gone ahead with some high-profile stock-market listings.

Of course, making graphics like this is far from being an exact science. Much of the changes we made are debatable, in many cases the Chinese equivalents have different features to their equivalents, and there are inevitable difficulties relating to category crossovers. We welcome any suggestions in the comments!

It is likely everybody has seen at least one of them, and if you’re working in a marketing environment you’ve probably seen loads: I’m talking infographics. Infographics are attractive graphics used to visualise information. Infographics have been used for thousands of years, with the most early forms most likely being cavemen telling the best ways to catch a sabre-tooth tiger via cave drawings.

Infographics have gained a lot of popularity especially the last couple of years. This may be related to the increased emphasis on improved user interfaces. With technology such as smartphones becoming more and more user friendly, in the same line information has to be made more attractive and easy to understand as well. Words are getting less popular, while our brains are getting more accustomed to visualised content.

Despite the fact they’re still widely used, marketers are wondering what the future may hold for them. To prevent boredom we have to keep them challenging and entertaining. New technologies will help us putting them in a new jacket, and keep them exciting without losing its informative value.

Ross Crooks has written a wonderful blog post about current and new infographics, and their evolution from static graphics to dynamic ones. Furthermore he gives his view on the next in infographics as in when to use HTML5, Real-Time Data Visualisation and the increased focus on UI design. Just as Ross says: “Is this just the beginning of a visual revolution, or have they already jumped the shark? This is an important question, especially for those who are making large investments in the medium, such as publishers and marketers.”

Let us know what your thoughts are about the future of infographics and share the pieces you find worth sharing!

China – More microblogging news, now with exploding melons
Other Asia – Korea’s Got Talent gives us a singing orphan and lip-synching schoolgirls
Mobile – Mobile payments to reach $50 billion by 2014
The Social Web – The luxury brands with the highest Facebook IQs
Creative – Perrier gets hotter, Dove’s Digital Body Language, and Death in Hong Kong
And Finally… The world’s most exclusive website

China

Microblog saves desperate melon farmer
http://www.china.org.cn/china/2011-06/07/content_22728263.htm
A farmer in China turned to Weibo.com to voice his frustrations about a lack of sales following stories of exploding melons (due to growth chemicals). He said, “The reports of bursting watermelons have brought a miserable life for us. We have tens of thousands of jin (one jin equals half a kilogram) of watermelons waiting to get rotten in the farmlands.” Seven hours after his first post, Fu said in a new post that his melons were almost sold out, but his neighbors were also in need of help.

China’s Sina to launch English microblogging site
http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/TechandScience/Story/STIStory_677126.html
Sina has announced plans to start an English version of its hugely popular microblogging site by the end of the year. It will pursue this venture with foreign partners. There is some speculation that Facebook could possibly partner with the Chinese giant.

While Sina’s English site could be a viable competitor for Twitter, Sina appears likely to police user posts on the English version of Weibo just as it does on the Chinese version, where it filters messages for sensitive content to comply with Chinese regulations.

Reports surfaced last week saying that China was behind a hacking campaign. The proof to support the headline was that Chinese IP addresses were involved. What both Google and Siobhan Gorman, who reported on the story for the Wall Street Journal (which we featured in Digerati last week), failed to disclose was that other countries IP addresses were used as well, including South Korea and the United States.

A fantastic resource for tracing China’s foreign investments. Between 2005 and 2010, China invested more than $319 billion overseas, funding projects in energy, agriculture, finance and more. The top countries that China invested in were Australiua ($33.9 billion), the USA ($28.1 billion), Nigeria ($15.4 billion), Iran ($15.1 billion), and Brazil ($14.9 billion).

Six months ago Ogilvy’s China social media team created an infographic to show just some of the local platforms thriving in place of the major international equivalents.

Since then new social media platforms have become relevant, either side of the Great Firewall, and so we have reworked the infographic to reflect some of the changes. We have also widened the scope to include more platforms within some of the categories.

Major changes include:

Three new categories: professional social networks, which may become more important with LinkedIn’s China future still uncertain, mobile chat, and online music.

GroupOn’s Chinese platform: Although just launched, if their planned investment is anything to go by and they get over some of their initial obstacles, GroupOn China is likely to become a major player in the next few months.

Quora: Although different to Yahoo Answers, which it replaced, Quora is now the Q&A platform everybody is talking about. On the China side we have included its direct equivalent, Zhihu, as well as Baidu Zhidao and Tianya Wenda, which are more like Yahoo Answers.

More Tencent: This Chinese internet giant has been given a lot more face than last time, with the addition of their microblog and the highly populated but relatively inactive Qzone.

…

Of course, making graphics like this is far from being an exact science. Much of the changes we made are debatable, in many cases the Chinese equivalents have different features to their equivalents, and there are inevitable difficulties relating to category crossovers. We welcome any suggestions in the comments!

Ogilvy PR’s social media team in China have created this infographic to help explain the user profiles of China’s main online social networks.

facebook might be blocked for the average user in China, but in its place have developed a number of equally sophisticated equivalents. Different demographics have gravitated towards their favorite social network based on the different features and marketing strategies adopted by the various sites. The infographic below presents the typical users of five online social networks, Kaixin, facebook, Douban, Renren and QZone.

Of course, our infographic is at best a broad generalization and it’s important to remember that many Chinese use more than one social network (the average number of accounts per person is 2.8).

Our social network infographic draws on our own research and various third-party reports (CNNIC, iResearch, Nielsen and AppleAp).

I’ve come across a few interesting ideas this week. The first:

1. Mountains and Mona Lisa - Samsung >> this has limited application as an emerging media I admit, but I offer it firstly because I was bought up on Wales, but more importantly because it was the precursor to the second idea – which is much more applicable:

2. Monuments and masses – Samsung 3D projections>> 3D projection will grow and grow as a brand experience format. These two ideas in tandem create quite an interesting space that Samsung is beginning to own – innovation with LED and lighting - similar to the Crowdsourcing ideas in Liverpool Street and Trafalgar Square that T Mobile had so much success in. There are lots of examples of monumental 3D projections – one most recently by BMW in Singapore. I adore this sort of creative work, because it is the true fusion of physical and digital. It creates both a physical and digital Theatre for the Brand in which consumers co-exist and co-create. Developing these “sustained conversations and dialogues” is core to building brands and emotions between them and consumers.

I also really enjoyed Google Chrome’s browser speed test. In a world full of complications I think it is a good example of how to make an intangible USP, more tangible. Until your competitor, the Opera Browser, responds with their own repost the Opera’s Speed test. Both ideas are sort of traditional “advertising stories” but neither will ever pay for media on TV.

A week would not be a week without some passing mention of an iPad, so here are two explorations of the iPad on the left side of leftfiled – the first is the iPad magic show from Japan; the second a low tech adaptation to make the hi tech, better: Velcro + iPad

Also several bookmarks on data visualisations and info-graphics this week – helping creative and data minds meet, or not:
David Armano’s excellent visualisations of our communication and social world: and a few others from Hubspot’s 22 social media Diagrams: and finally a good collection from Nowsourcing .
